In partnership with local authorities and other public transport providers, Arriva Trains Wales is launching a new communication tool for passengers who may have difficulty with communication.
The ‘Orange Wallet’ is one of a range of collaborative regional projects funded by the Welsh Government as part of the ‘All Wales ASD strategy’. It is intended to help people, especially those on the Autistic Spectrum, to cope more easily with public transport. The project is based on schemes already running in Devon and Pembrokeshire.
The wallet is a communication tool, which can be used by people who sometimes find it difficult to communicate their needs to staff when using public transport. The wallet contains space for the user to
insert written and/or visual prompts to show the conductor, station staff or when buying a ticket at a booking office.
Staff on public transport services across Wales will be trained to recognise the wallet and will know to be patient and provide appropriate help. The wallet will be recognised by staff across the Arriva Trains Wales network and by major local bus services including First Cymru, Stagecoach, Cardiff Bus, Newport Bus and Arriva Bus.
Who is it for?
The Orange Wallet has been designed for people who would like support to communicate with staff when using buses or trains, especially those with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
What is it?
It is a wallet that contains plastic pockets. The pockets are designed to hold words and pictures that will help you to communicate your needs to transport staff. The words and pictures are interchangeable.
How is it used?
You can show the wallet and inserts to staff to support your communication or when you need help. Transport staff are aware of the Orange Wallet scheme and will realise that you need support.
How to create words and pictures
There are templates available that you can use, or you can create your own pocket inserts by cutting paper to 90mm by 60mm size. Templates can be downloaded from each transport provider’s website.
In an emergency
It is advisable to have details of the person you would want to be contacted in an emergency written in the wallet. The wallet can be shown to a member of staff to indicate that help is needed.
Are there any other benefits?
The Orange Wallet does not provide any financial benefit or priority over other passengers. Its purpose is to support communication.
